Practice Wellness...Personal


Beginning in January, the NCMS Plan will introduce a resource addressing financial, professional, and mental wellness among our population!

Practice Wellness Personal, an employee assistance program empowered by LifeWorks, will provide counseling, social communication, digital content, discounts, and other perks. This will allow for 24/7/365 assistance for ALL NCMS Plan members with health coverage. The program also offers a news-feed style interface, which allows the NCMS Plan to communicate news directly to members. Stay tuned. More information to come as the New Year approaches!

 

Wellness Webinar-"Living your why" with Sean Foy

Have you uncovered your calling? Do you place purpose in WHY you do the things you do? Do you know how to live your “why” every single day?

NCMS Plan members tuned in on October 26th, 2016 to join the renowned fitness, weight management, and healthy living expert, Sean Foy, for the “Living Your Why” webinar. The hour-long session challenged participants to identify their purpose or calling, and then to deeply consider if they are truly living their “why” to the fullest every single day.

The webinar provided an empowering well-being experience for attendees. During the discussion, Sean illustrated how to craft and live a purpose driven life while also helping those you care about do the same. The conversation introduced practical tips, strategies, and best practices for living your “why” day in and day out.

Some of those Included:

  • How to craft your "why"
  • How to transition through the different stages of change when discovering your “why”
  • Defining your core values
  • Sharing your "why" with other people around you

Pieces of the Whole-Occupational Well-Being

When you embark on the route to occupational well-being, you will discover what occupational opportunities are out there and which opportunities suit you best. Maintaining occupational well-being allows you to develop unique skills and talents that are both personally and professionally rewarding.

Choice of profession, job satisfaction, career ambitions, and personal performance are all important components of your path’s terrain. I chose a career in health promotion because I recognized the personal satisfaction and enrichment felt when working with clients on individual behavior change and creating an overall culture of health at medical practices.

While traveling on the path toward occupational well-being, I’ve been able to contribute my unique gifts, skills, and talents to my work that are both personally meaningful and rewarding.

In 2015, I participated in the HELPS International Guatemala Medical Mission. I had the opportunity to partner with some of the leading healthcare professionals in the U.S., setting up clinics and operating rooms and treating and educating hundreds of natives. The team I was a part of performed over 150 surgeries, saw 900 patients cleaned & polished 99 mouths in a span of five days.
I encourage you to get involved, accept life’s great challenges, and create for yourself experiences that are breathtaking in their truth, beauty, simplicity and stark reality.


 

Practice Wellness Summit & Resilience Training

This year’s Practice Wellness Summit integrated a new area of well-being, resilience. A specialized workshop taught by Chief Instructor, Glenn Murphy, was the highlight of the Practice Wellness Summit for many. As burnout rates among the healthcare profession continue to worsen, resiliency has become a major focus for practices across the country. Glenn’s session provided innovative strategies for healthcare professionals to utilize when facing all forms of psychological stress in and outside out the office. Having the ability to process and handle stress effectively is a crucial part in achieving a sense of mindfulness and well-being!

Are the employees within your practice battling affliction from stress and unhealthy habits?

A recent Mayo Clinic study bridged the link of stress and burnout to a lack of self-care and unhealthy behaviors. Many health care workers suffer from job strain, which negatively impacts their quality of life over time. Beginning January 2017, the NCMS Plan will offer additional programming that will provide support for emotional, mental, and financial wellness. Stay tuned for more information.

Compounds in Citrus Fruit may Prevent Heart Disease, Fatty Liver, and Diabetes in Obese People

Did you know that consuming citrus fruits can help lower stress, liver damage, and blood glucose levels in the body? Citrus fruits contain compounds called flavanones which provide the body with many risk-reduction benefits. While this is beneficial, eating citrus fruit alone does not drastically transform one’s diet. A more dynamic approach to nutrition and weight management is required to make impactable and sustainable dietary changes. The NCMS Plan Registered Dietitian Network supports practices by matching them with a dietitian in their area that can serve their employees. The selected dietitians have been vetted and have an affiliation with the NCMS Plan to provide one-on-one and group nutrition counseling to help employees assess their diet and set attainable goals

CVS removed tobacco from their shelves—can you remove it from your practice’s culture?

Last fall, CVS took a bold stand in tobacco prevention by removing all tobacco products from the shelves. Has your practice joined the tobacco-free initiative by creating a tobacco free worksite? If not, now is the time to take that step. The NCMS Plan has partnered with QuitLineNC (1-800-QUITNOW or 1-800-784-8669) to provide members with a comprehensive tobacco cessation program. This service includes telephonic and integrated web-based counseling PLUS Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) that includes eight weeks of FREE patches, gum, lozenges or combination of all three.

Being Physically Active now will Pay Dividends Later in Life

The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease recently published a study which established a strong association between moderately vigorous physical activity and better cognition later in life. Moderate amounts of physical activity lead to improvements in vascular health, as well as memory-enhancing benefits 25 years down the line. The Eat Smart, Move More! Weigh Less (ESMMWL) program offers lessons around nutrition and physical activity, while providing encouragement to improve and embrace your well-being. Take the steps now to live a healthier tomorrow!
